Calculating Fuel Savings from Switching Vehicles

Fuel savings from switching vehicles is the difference between what your current vehicle burns in fuel each year and what a comparison vehicle would burn at the same distance and fuel price. Enter how far you drive in a year, both vehicles’ fuel economy, and the price of fuel, and this calculator shows the annual dollar difference and how it adds up over a multi-year ownership period.

The Formula

A positive result means the comparison vehicle saves money; a negative result means it would actually cost more to fuel, and this calculator reports that honestly rather than only ever assuming the alternative wins. Multiplying the annual savings by the number of years you’d plan to own the vehicle gives the projected total over that ownership period.

Worked Example

Driving 15,000 miles per year, currently in a vehicle getting 25 MPG, considering one that gets 40 MPG, with gas at $3.50 per gallon, projected over 5 years:

  1. Current vehicle’s yearly cost: 15,000 miles ÷ 25 MPG = 600 gallons, and 600×3.50=2,100\vC{600} \times \vD{3.50} = 2{,}100 per year.
  2. Comparison vehicle’s yearly cost: 15,000 miles ÷ 40 MPG = 375 gallons, and 375×3.50=1,312.50\vE{375} \times \vD{3.50} = 1{,}312.50 per year.
  3. Annual savings: 2,1001,312.50=787.502{,}100 - 1{,}312.50 = 787.50 — about 37.5% less spent on fuel.
  4. Projected over 5 years: 787.50×5=3,937.50787.50 \times 5 = 3{,}937.50.

Key Factors to Consider

  • Fuel savings are only one part of the total cost of switching vehicles. A vehicle switch also involves purchase price, potential financing, insurance changes, and depreciation — this calculator isolates the fuel-cost comparison specifically, which is a real and useful factor but not the complete financial picture of switching vehicles.
  • Fuel prices fluctuate, so a single-price snapshot is a simplification. This calculator uses one fuel price for the whole projection period — real fuel prices vary over months and years, so treat the multi-year projection as an estimate at today’s price, not a guaranteed future savings figure.
  • Real-world fuel economy often differs somewhat from the official rated MPG figure. Driving style, terrain, climate, and vehicle load can all cause actual fuel economy to differ from a window-sticker or manufacturer rating — using your own observed fuel economy (from the Gas Mileage Calculator) for your current vehicle gives a more accurate baseline than the official rating.
  • Annual driving distance directly scales the size of any savings or extra cost. Someone who drives significantly more or less than the national average will see a proportionally larger or smaller dollar difference from the same MPG gap — use your own realistic annual mileage, not an assumed average, for an accurate comparison.

As covered above, this calculator holds fuel price constant for the whole projection period — real prices rise and fall over months and years, so a 5-year total is a reasonable estimate at current prices, not a promise of exactly that dollar figure.
  • Treating fuel savings alone as the complete financial case for switching vehicles. As covered above, a vehicle switch also involves purchase price, financing, insurance, and depreciation — a real switching decision needs those figures too, not just the fuel-cost side.
  • Using a national-average annual mileage instead of your own actual driving distance. As covered above, annual distance scales the dollar result proportionally — someone who drives far more or less than average will see a savings figure that’s meaningfully off if it’s based on an assumed average rather than their real yearly mileage.
