  • Different brewing methods commonly use different typical ratios. Espresso uses a much richer ratio (often around 1:2), French press and pour-over typically land in the 1:15-1:17 range, and cold brew concentrate often uses a much stronger ratio (like 1:8) since it’s diluted before drinking — check the typical range for your specific brewing method rather than assuming one universal ratio applies everywhere.

Common Mistakes

  • Mixing up which side of the ratio is coffee and which is water. A “1:16” ratio means 1 part coffee to 16 parts water — not the other way around. Flipping the two numbers by accident produces a wildly over- or under-strength result that has nothing to do with your actual taste preference.
  • Assuming a “scoop” or tablespoon of coffee always weighs the same amount. Coffee’s volume-to- weight relationship shifts with grind size and roast level, so two tablespoons of a coarse, lightly-roasted bean can weigh noticeably less than two tablespoons of a fine, dark-roasted one — this is exactly why weighing coffee gives more repeatable results than scooping it.
  • Forgetting that immersion methods yield less liquid than the water poured in. In a French press or other immersion brew, the spent grounds soak up and hold onto some of the water rather than releasing it all back into your cup — so the finished coffee in your mug will measure a bit less than the water you started with, even though your ratio math was correct.

Many pour-over recipes call for a “bloom” — a small amount of hot water poured over the grounds first and left to sit for 30-45 seconds before the rest of the water is added, letting trapped carbon dioxide escape so the coffee extracts more evenly. That bloom water still counts toward your total water amount when you’re hitting a target ratio: if this calculator says you need 480 g of water for your dose of coffee, the bloom water comes out of that same 480 g total rather than being poured in addition to it.
