This calculator projects the modern Gregorian calendar (the one most of the world uses today) backwards and forwards indefinitely, which is accurate for any date in the Gregorian era. For very old dates, this may not exactly match the calendar actually in use at the time in every region — different countries switched from the older Julian calendar to the Gregorian one at different points, mostly between the 1500s and early 1900s.

  • The same date algorithm applies to any date, no matter how far in the future. Since the Gregorian calendar’s leap-year rule is a fixed, known pattern (a leap year every 4 years, except century years not divisible by 400), the day-of-week for a date centuries from now can be computed exactly the same way as for a date next week.
  • A given date repeats its day of the week roughly every 5-6 years, but not on a perfectly fixed cycle. Because of how leap years interact with the 7-day week, the day a specific calendar date falls on doesn’t repeat on a simple annual pattern — this is exactly why a calculator (rather than mental math) is the reliable way to check it.
  • Historical dates before a region’s Julian-to-Gregorian switch may not match records from that time and place. Because leap years add an extra day unevenly, a date’s weekday doesn’t return to the same value on a clean schedule — it typically takes several years, and the exact gap varies depending on how many leap days fall in between.
