Physical-keyboard and mobile-touchscreen typing speeds are measured against separate benchmark tables since the two aren't directly comparable. The interactive test itself uses a fixed bank of common English words regardless of your language setting.

Measuring Gross and Net Typing Speed

Words per minute (WPM) measures typing speed — gross WPM counts every word typed, while net WPM subtracts a penalty for errors. Take the built-in interactive typing test, or enter your own results from any typing test, to find both — plus how you compare to other typists.

The Interactive Typing Test

Choose Take the Test and pick a duration (15, 30, 60, or 120 seconds). The timer starts the instant you type your first character, not when the test loads — so you can read the passage and get ready first. Correctly-typed characters and mistakes are highlighted as you go, backspace corrects a mistake normally, and pasting into the test is disabled, so the result reflects your own typing rather than a shortcut. When the timer runs out, your words typed, errors, and accuracy are calculated automatically.

The test detects whether you’re using a physical keyboard or a touchscreen, and only ever compares your result against other typists on the same kind of device — physical-keyboard and touchscreen typing speeds aren’t directly comparable, so mixing the two would be misleading either way.

Accuracy is the share of typed characters that were correct — equivalently, the ratio of net to gross WPM, since every error subtracts the same fraction from both.

  • Typing speed naturally trades off against accuracy, and net WPM is what reveals that balance. Typing very fast but making many mistakes can produce a lower net WPM than a slower, more accurate pace, since every error directly reduces the net figure — this is exactly why net WPM, not gross WPM alone, is the more meaningful measure of real typing productivity.
  • A single test’s result can vary noticeably from attempt to attempt, especially over a short duration. A brief 15-second test is more sensitive to a single lucky or unlucky moment than a longer 60- or 120-second test — averaging results across several attempts, or using a longer test duration, gives a more stable and representative measure of true typing speed.
  • Physical keyboard and touchscreen typing speeds aren’t directly comparable, since they’re fundamentally different physical input methods. This is exactly why this calculator’s comparison table and percentile estimates are split by device type — comparing a touchscreen result against a physical-keyboard benchmark (or vice versa) would be misleading either way.
  • The specific text passage typed can itself affect measured speed. A passage full of common, short, familiar words is typically typed faster than one with unusual words, numbers, or special characters — comparing typing speed results across genuinely different test passages isn’t a perfectly even comparison.

Common Mistakes

  • Judging typing speed from a single short attempt. A 15-second test can swing noticeably based on one stumble or one lucky stretch of easy words — a longer duration, or the average of several attempts, gives a far more reliable number than any one short run.
  • Comparing gross WPM across two very different accuracy levels. A high gross WPM achieved with frequent mistakes isn’t actually faster in any meaningful sense than a lower gross WPM typed almost perfectly — net WPM is the number that actually accounts for that tradeoff.
  • Comparing a touchscreen result directly against a physical-keyboard benchmark. The two input methods measure fundamentally different physical skills, so a touchscreen score judged against keyboard percentiles (or vice versa) will look artificially low or high.
