Turning Bed Size and Spacing Into a Plant Count

The Formula

The “+1” accounts for a plant sitting right at the bed’s edge, then one more plant fitting for every full spacing increment after it.

Worked Example

A 3m × 2m bed with 30cm spacing:

  1. Plants per row: 3÷0.3+1=11\vA{\lfloor 3 \div 0.3 \rfloor + 1 = 11}
  2. Rows: 2÷0.3+1=7\vB{\lfloor 2 \div 0.3 \rfloor + 1 = 7}

Key Factors to Consider

  • Recommended spacing on a seed packet or plant tag accounts for the plant’s full mature size, not its size at planting. Crowding plants closer than the recommended spacing to fit more into a bed usually backfires — competition for light, water, and nutrients between overcrowded mature plants often reduces overall yield or growth compared to properly-spaced plants.
  • A simple square grid isn’t the only spacing layout, and some gardeners prefer a triangular (offset/hexagonal) pattern instead. Offsetting alternating rows by half the spacing distance can fit noticeably more plants into the same bed area than a plain square grid, since it packs circles (each plant’s own growing radius) more efficiently — worth considering for space-constrained beds.
  • Different plants in the same bed often have very different spacing needs. A vegetable garden mixing several crop types needs each crop’s own spacing figure looked up separately — this calculator estimates one crop type’s fit at a time, so a mixed bed needs the calculation run once per crop with its own recommended spacing.

  • Spacing plants by their size at planting time instead of their mature size. A young seedling looks tiny compared to the recommended spacing, tempting a gardener to plant closer — but the spacing figure accounts for how large the plant will eventually grow, not how it looks on day one.
