How Currency, Unit System, and Number Format Preferences Work on This Site
Three separate settings that quietly control how every number on this site displays -- Currency, Unit System, and Number Format -- and how they interact with the locale a page is viewed in, so results always read naturally no matter where you're visiting from.
A number is never just a number — it’s a number in a currency, a unit, and a formatting convention, and getting any one of those wrong changes what the number actually means. This site has three separate preferences that control exactly that, and understanding how they work together (and how they differ from the page’s language) makes every calculator’s result easier to trust and easier to read correctly.
Three Preferences, Not One
It’s tempting to assume “which country am I in” answers everything about how a number should look, but currency, units, and number formatting are genuinely three separate questions, and this site treats them that way:
- Currency controls which money unit a dollar-denominated calculator uses — dollars, euros, pounds, and so on — and where the symbol is placed.
- Unit System controls whether length, weight, temperature, and similar physical measurements display in imperial (feet, pounds, Fahrenheit) or metric (meters, kilograms, Celsius).
- Number Format controls the punctuation used to group and separate digits — whether a million and a half is written 1,500,000.00, 1.500.000,00, or 1 500 000,00, since different regions use the comma, the period, and the space differently for exactly the same underlying number.
Each of these can be set independently in this site’s Settings panel. A visitor doesn’t have to accept a single bundled “region” preset that gets currency right but units wrong, or vice versa — each setting can be adjusted on its own to match how that specific visitor actually thinks about money, distance, and digit grouping, which don’t always travel together in real life.
Practical takeaway: if a calculator’s result looks almost right but the currency, the unit, or the digit grouping feels off, check Settings — each of the three has its own control, and getting the others right doesn’t automatically fix the third.
Sensible Defaults, Always Overridable
None of these three settings require a visitor to configure anything before a calculator becomes useful. Each one infers a sensible starting point automatically — generally from the browser’s own locale and, where available, a best-effort sense of the visitor’s country — so a first-time visitor already sees numbers formatted in a way that looks natural to them, with no setup required. From that starting point, changing any one preference in Settings persists it for future visits, overriding the automatic guess until it’s changed again.
Practical takeaway: the automatic default is a starting guess, not a locked-in choice — if a calculator’s numbers don’t display the way you’d naturally write them, open Settings and adjust the specific preference that’s off, rather than assuming the site can’t be changed to fit.
Page Language Is a Separate Thing From These Preferences
It’s worth being precise about one distinction that’s easy to conflate: which language a page’s text is written in (English, Spanish, German, and so on) is a different setting from Currency, Unit System, or Number Format. A page can be read in one language while its numbers follow a completely different formatting convention, because the two questions — “what language is the prose in” and “how should a number look” — don’t have to have the same answer. Viewing a page in one language doesn’t silently reset any of the three number-related preferences described above; each stays exactly as you last set it (or as it was inferred) regardless of which language the surrounding text happens to be in. The one deliberate exception is Number Format’s own Auto option, covered next — by design, it’s specifically meant to follow the page’s own language when no explicit Number Format choice has been made, which is different from Currency and Unit System (neither of which has an Auto-style “follow the page” mode).
Practical takeaway: don’t expect switching the page’s language to also switch how numbers are formatted — if a number needs to look different, that’s a separate adjustment in Settings, not a side effect of a language change.
Auto Mode Follows the Page You’re Actually Viewing
Alongside a specific manual choice, Number Format also offers an “Auto” option that isn’t a fixed convention at all — it dynamically follows the real formatting convention of whichever language a given page is currently being viewed in, using the same underlying data that determines correct digit grouping and decimal punctuation for that language. This means a visitor who deliberately wants “whatever this page’s own language normally does” doesn’t have to guess at or manually configure that convention themselves — Auto mode already knows it. A manual, explicit choice (rather than Auto) always takes precedence over this automatic page-following behavior, exactly the same way any explicit override in Settings takes precedence over an inferred default.
Practical takeaway: if you’re comfortable with a specific format regardless of what page you’re on, set it explicitly; if you’d rather each page just format numbers the way that page’s own language naturally would, Auto mode is built for exactly that.
Putting It Together
Currency, Unit System, and Number Format are three genuinely independent settings, not one bundled region choice — each can be adjusted on its own in Settings to match how you actually think about money, distance, and digits. All three start from a sensible automatic guess so nothing needs configuring before a calculator is useful, but any explicit choice you make always overrides that guess going forward. And critically — with one deliberate exception, Number Format’s own Auto option, which by design follows the page’s own language when no explicit Number Format choice has been made — none of the three is otherwise tied to the page’s language: reading a page in a different language never silently changes an explicit Currency, Unit System, or Number Format choice you’ve made, keeping these as genuinely separate, independently controllable preferences the way the underlying real-world questions actually are.
