Both measurements use the same unit — the ratio itself is unitless, so it comes out identical whether you measure in centimeters or inches.

  • Fat storage patterns tend to differ naturally between men and women, which is exactly why the risk thresholds are gender-specific rather than one universal number. Men more commonly carry excess fat around the abdomen (“apple” shape), while women more commonly carry it around the hips and thighs (“pear” shape) — the separate thresholds for each sex reflect this well-documented physiological difference.
  • Measuring at the correct, consistent anatomical points matters for a reliable, comparable result. Waist circumference is typically measured at the narrowest point of the torso (or the navel level), and hip circumference at the widest point around the buttocks — measuring consistently at these same points each time is more important than achieving a perfectly precise measurement on any single occasion.
  • Waist-to-hip ratio and BMI measure genuinely different things, and using both together gives a fuller picture than either alone.   • Swapping the waist and hip measurements. Since hip circumference is usually the larger of the two, entering the measurements in the wrong fields produces a ratio well below 1.0 that looks reassuring but doesn’t reflect reality — double-check which number went in which field.
  • Measuring waist and hip at inconsistent points, or on different days under different conditions. A waist measured right after a large meal versus first thing in the morning can shift enough to change the risk category — measure both circumferences back to back, at the same points, for a result that’s actually comparable over time.
  • Selecting the wrong gender at birth. The risk thresholds are genuinely different for men and women — the same ratio can fall in a different risk band depending on which set of thresholds applies.
