Why Eastward Travel Is Harder

Most people’s internal circadian clock naturally runs slightly longer than 24 hours. Traveling west delays your body clock (a later bedtime), which works with that natural tendency — traveling east advances it (an earlier bedtime), which fights against it.   • Individual variation in jet lag severity is significant, beyond the general west-vs-east rule. Age, general sleep habits, and individual circadian rhythm flexibility all affect how quickly a specific person adjusts — this calculator’s rate is a widely-cited population average, not a precise prediction for any one traveler.
  • A very long flight crossing many time zones can sometimes recover faster than this linear estimate suggests, especially with deliberate pre-adjustment. Gradually shifting sleep and meal times in the days before travel (rather than waiting until arrival to start adjusting) can meaningfully shorten real recovery time compared to a fully reactive approach.
  • Trips of only a few time zones may cause noticeably milder symptoms than this formula’s linear scaling implies. The one-day/1.5-day-per-zone rule is a reasonable approximation across a typical range of time zone crossings, but very short trips (1-2 zones) often produce disproportionately mild jet lag in practice.
  • Sleep debt from the flight itself is a separate factor from jet lag proper.
