Dividing a Recipe’s Nutrition Totals Into a Per-Serving Breakdown

Per-serving nutrition is a recipe’s total nutrition divided by its number of servings. Enter the whole recipe’s calories, protein, fat, and carbs — figures you already have from a nutrition-label lookup tool, the USDA FoodData Central database, or your own tracking app — plus how many servings it makes, and this calculator divides all four figures at once. A pot of chili with 1,200 calories, 80g protein, 40g fat, and 120g carbs total, making 4 servings:

Key Factors to Consider

  • How you define a “serving” directly changes the per-serving numbers, and that definition is entirely up to you. A recipe that “makes 4 servings” only means something once you decide what one serving actually is (a cup, a bowl, a slice) — entering a different total serving count for the same recipe (say, 6 smaller portions instead of 4 larger ones) produces a different, equally valid per-serving breakdown.
  • A meaningful gap between the stated calorie count and the macros-implied calorie count often points to fiber, alcohol, or rounding, not necessarily an error. Fiber and sugar alcohols are sometimes excluded or partially discounted from a food label’s calorie count even though they’re included in the “carbs” figure, and most nutrition labels round each number independently — a small mismatch between the stated total and the macro cross-check is expected, not a sign something was entered wrong.
  • This calculator only does the arithmetic on totals you already have — the accuracy of the result depends entirely on the accuracy of those inputs.
