How the Army Body Fat Standard Is Calculated
The Army Body Fat Calculator estimates body fat percentage from a single tape-measure
circumference, using the Army’s current one-site abdominal-circumference worksheet formula (DA
Form 5500 for men, DA Form 5501 for women). Enter your gender at birth, body weight, and
abdominal circumference, and this calculator estimates your body fat percentage and which standard
category it falls into.
This is a genuinely different formula from the U.S. Navy Circumference Method used by this site’s
other Body Fat Percentage Calculator — both estimate the same thing, but were developed and published
independently, use different measurements, and don’t always agree exactly.
This formula changed in 2023. Before June 12, 2023, the Army used a different, multi-site
circumference method (neck, waist, height, plus hip for women) — the same style of formula this
site’s Navy-method calculator still uses. That older method is no longer an authorized Army method
at all as of June 9, 2024, even as a fallback. This calculator uses the Army’s current formula.

The official worksheet is calibrated in pounds and inches — this calculator converts automatically
regardless of which unit you enter in. Abdominal circumference is measured at the navel, standing
relaxed with the tape held horizontal, neither sucking in nor pushing out; the worksheet recommends
averaging at least two measurements.
The result is compared against the same American Council on Exercise (ACE) categories this site’s
Navy-method calculator already uses — Essential Fat, Athletes, Fitness, Average, and Obese — so a
given percentage lands in the same category regardless of which formula produced it.
Key Factors to Consider
Measurement technique makes a real difference in the result. A tape measured too loosely or
compressed too tightly against the skin, or measured at the wrong landmark (not level at the
navel), can shift the circumference reading by enough to noticeably change the estimated body
fat percentage — measure carefully, and average two or more readings.
This is the Army’s own current worksheet formula, but it’s still an estimate, not a diagnostic
measurement. More direct methods (DEXA scans, hydrostatic weighing) measure body composition
more precisely, but a one-site circumference method is fast, inexpensive, and needs no special
equipment, which is why the Army standardized on it for routine testing.
The Army and Navy circumference methods can disagree for the same person. Both are widely
used and independently developed, but their different formulas and different measurement points
mean they don’t always produce identical results for the same body — use whichever matches the
official record you’re comparing against.
This method can be less accurate for body types outside the population it was validated on.
Very muscular or very lean individuals, in particular, are more likely to see a meaningfully off
estimate from any circumference-based method, since these formulas were derived from population
averages rather than direct fat measurement.
Common Mistakes
Measuring over clothing instead of directly against skin. Even a thin shirt can add enough
slack or bulk to the tape reading to shift the estimated body fat percentage — take measurements
against bare skin for the most accurate result.
Not pulling the tape to the same tension every time. A tape measured snug one time and loose
the next will produce inconsistent readings — the tape should sit against the skin without
compressing it, applied the same way each time for a comparable result over time.
Taking only one measurement instead of averaging. A single reading is more sensitive to
breathing/posture variation than an average of two or three — the official worksheet recommends
averaging for exactly this reason.
Worked Example
A male, body weight 180 lb, abdominal circumference 34 in:

−26.97−21.6+67.66≈19.1%
An estimated body fat of about 19.1% falls in the Average category for men (18-24%).
Useful to Know
The Army’s own official pass/fail body fat standard is a different, stricter number than the
general ACE categories shown here, and it varies by age and sex — the current age-and-sex
maximum-allowable-body-fat table lives on the official worksheets themselves. A soldier over their
own age-and-sex maximum can be flagged for the Army Body Composition Program regardless of which
general fitness category (Average, Fitness, etc.) their percentage happens to fall into here.
Check the current DA Form 5500/5501 table directly for the exact standard that applies to an
official record.

How is this different from the U.S. Navy body fat method?
Both estimate body fat percentage from tape-measure circumferences, but they use independently-developed formulas that don't always agree exactly. This calculator uses the Army's current (2023-onward) one-site abdominal-circumference method from DA Form 5500/5501, not the Navy's neck/waist(+hip) method.
Where exactly should I measure my abdomen?
At the navel (belly button), standing relaxed with the tape held horizontal -- don't suck in or push out your stomach. Take at least two measurements and use the average; if they differ noticeably, take a third and average the two closest readings.
Why does the formula differ between men and women?
Body composition and fat distribution differ between men and women on average, so the Army's worksheet uses separate coefficients for each -- DA Form 5500 for men, DA Form 5501 for women.
Why do the Army and Navy methods sometimes give different results for the same person?
They're independently developed formulas using different measurement points and statistical derivations, so they don't always agree exactly even for the same person. Use whichever one matches the official standard or record you're comparing against.
How accurate is a circumference-based body fat estimate compared to a DEXA scan?
Less precise than a direct measurement method like a DEXA scan or hydrostatic weighing, but far faster, cheaper, and equipment-free -- which is exactly why the military standardized on a circumference-based method for routine fitness assessments. Treat the result as a reasonable estimate, not a clinical-grade measurement.
Can I use this if I'm not in the military?
Yes -- the formula itself is just circumference-based math and works for anyone, but the specific pass/fail body fat standards it's compared against (and the whole reason the formula exists) are the U.S. Army's own fitness requirements. A civilian can use the estimate, but shouldn't expect the category labels to carry any official meaning outside a military context.
