Key Factors to Consider
Rooms with more outside corners typically need a bigger waste margin. An inside corner (the
common case, where two walls meet at a room’s interior) wastes relatively little material on its
miter cut, but an outside corner (common with closets, bump-outs, or an L-shaped room) needs a
compound miter that wastes somewhat more per cut — a room with several outside corners may want
a higher waste margin than the 10% default.
This subtracts standard door openings only, not other gaps. Wide archways, pass-throughs, or
a closet opening without a door aren’t automatically accounted for by the door count field — for
a room with those features, manually reduce the perimeter further to match your room’s actual
layout.
Matching board length to your wall segments reduces both waste and visible seams. Buying
boards close to the length of your longest wall runs, where practical, means fewer joints and
less leftover material than defaulting to whatever standard length happens to be on hand.
Trim height and profile are a separate cost decision from quantity. This calculator finds
how much linear footage to buy, not which style — a taller or more ornate profile costs more per
linear foot but doesn’t change the quantity math here.
Interpreting Your Results
The boards needed figure is already rounded up to a whole number, so it’s the number to hand a
lumberyard or write on a shopping list — there’s no need to round it yourself. The order length
underneath it is the same figure before that final rounding, useful mainly for sanity-checking that
the board count makes sense for your perimeter (a very small remainder after the last whole board
means you’re close to needing one fewer, which is worth double-checking against your actual wall
layout before buying less).
If your room isn’t a simple rectangle — an L-shaped room, a bay window, or a closet that opens into
it — measure and enter the walls as if you were tracing the actual perimeter with a tape measure,
not the length × width of the room’s bounding rectangle. The formula below assumes a rectangular
footprint; for anything more complex, use this calculator’s net-perimeter and waste-margin logic as
a guide and adjust the room dimensions you enter to match your real wall lengths.
Common Mistakes
Forgetting that door openings only subtract from the perimeter you actually trim. A room with
a doorway on an interior wall (say, into a hallway) still gets the same 0.9 m deduction as an
exterior door — the deduction models the gap baseboard doesn’t cross, not the door’s location or
type.
Buying exactly the calculated order length with no waste margin at all. Skipping the waste
margin (or setting it to 0%) only makes sense if you’re an experienced installer working with
minimal cuts — most first-time DIYers underestimate how much a handful of imperfect miter cuts and
a mismeasured piece can eat into the total.
Assuming a taller or more decorative trim profile needs a different quantity formula. It
doesn’t — the length of wall a board needs to cover is the same regardless of how tall or ornate

The Formula
Net Perimeter=2×(Length+Width)−(Doors×Door Width)
The net perimeter is then increased by the waste margin and divided by the board length, rounding
up to a whole number of boards.
Worked Example
A 4 m × 3 m room with 1 door, 2.44 m boards, and a 10% waste margin:
Perimeter: 2×(4+3)=14 m.
Net perimeter: 14−0.9=13.1 m (one door at the standard 0.9 m estimate).
Order length: 13.1×1.10=14.41 m.

Useful to Know
Most trim carpenters prime or paint baseboard before installing it — it’s much easier to get a
clean, even coat on a board lying flat on sawhorses than on one already nailed to a wall at floor
level. The usual sequence is: paint the walls first, prime/paint the baseboard separately, install
it, then run a bead of paintable caulk along the top seam and touch up any nail holes or small gaps
last. If a room is prone to moisture — a bathroom, laundry room, or a mudroom near an exterior
door — solid wood or PVC trim holds up better than standard MDF baseboard, which can swell or
