Drywall coverage is based on a room’s total wall area minus its door and window openings, divided by however many square feet a single sheet covers. Enter your room’s dimensions, door and window counts, and preferred sheet size, and this calculator works out how many sheets to buy.

Standard drywall sheets come in a few common sizes — 4’x8’, 4’x10’, and 4’x12’ — and choosing a larger size means fewer seams to tape and finish later, at the cost of a heavier, harder-to-handle sheet.

Net wall area is the room’s perimeter times wall height, minus a typical planning-estimate deduction for each door (about 20 sq ft) and window (about 15 sq ft) — the same convention this site’s own Paint Calculator uses for the same reason.

A 4 m x 3.5 m room with 2.4 m walls, 1 door, 2 windows, using standard 4’x8’ sheets:

  1. Net wall area: about 31.4 sq meters (gross wall area minus door/window deductions).
  2. Sheets needed: 11 — recommended order with a 10% waste margin: 13 sheets.

Key Factors to Consider

  • Fire-rated and moisture-resistant drywall types can differ in thickness and weight from standard drywall. A garage wall shared with living space, or a bathroom or basement installation, often calls for a specific drywall type (fire-rated, moisture-resistant/“green board”) rather than standard drywall — check local code and the room’s specific use before buying.
  • Orientation (horizontal vs. vertical hanging) affects the number of seams, not the sheet count. Hanging sheets horizontally across studs typically creates fewer, more easily taped/finished seams on a standard 8-foot wall than hanging vertically — this doesn’t change how many sheets you need, but it does affect installation time and finish quality.

  • This estimate assumes a fairly standard, rectangular room. A room with unusual angles, high ceilings, or many small wall segments will generate more cuts and waste than this straightforward perimeter-based calculation assumes — consider a higher waste margin for an irregular room.
