  • A driveway or a heavily trafficked area typically needs a multi-layer base, not a single gravel depth. A driveway base commonly uses a coarser layer at the bottom for structural support with a finer top layer for a smooth surface — this calculator estimates a single-layer depth, so a multi-layer driveway design needs each layer calculated separately.
  • Compaction reduces gravel’s settled depth compared to its loose, delivered volume. Freshly delivered gravel is looser than gravel that’s been driven or walked on for a while — ordering based on the desired FINAL compacted depth (rather than the loose delivered depth) can mean ordering somewhat more than a pure volume calculation suggests, depending on the material.
  • Angular crushed stone locks together better than smooth, rounded gravel like pea gravel or river rock.   • Treating a driveway as a single gravel layer. As covered above, a load-bearing driveway base typically needs a coarser structural layer plus a finer top layer — running this calculator once for the whole depth undercounts what a proper multi-layer base actually requires.
  • Skipping the waste margin on an uneven or sloped area. The default 5% margin assumes reasonably flat, even ground — a sloped yard, an irregular border, or a path with curves loses more material to spillage and trimming, and benefits from bumping that percentage up before ordering.
