Key Factors to Consider

  • Screened topsoil (sifted to remove rocks and debris) generally costs more but is easier to work with than unscreened topsoil. For a new garden bed or fine lawn topdressing, screened topsoil’s finer, more consistent texture is usually worth the extra cost — unscreened topsoil can be a reasonable, cheaper choice for a larger fill project where fine texture matters less.
  • Topsoil quality varies significantly by supplier, and “topsoil” isn’t a strictly regulated term.
