The Formula

  • Gutter length to order = Eave Length × (1 + Waste % ÷ 100).
  • Downspouts needed = Eave Length ÷ Downspout Spacing, rounded up (minimum of 1).
  • Gutter size = 6 inches if roof area exceeds roughly 743 m² (about 8,000 sq ft), otherwise the standard 5 inches.

Worked Example

45 m of eave length, 250 m² roof area, 12 m downspout spacing, and a 5% waste allowance:

  1. Gutter length to order: 47.25 m (45 m × 1.05).
  2. Downspouts needed: 4 (45 m ÷ 12 m, rounded up).
  3. Recommended gutter size: 5 inches (roof area is below the 743 m² threshold).

Key Factors to Consider

  • Gutter material affects both durability and cost, separate from sizing. Aluminum, vinyl, steel, and copper gutters all have different lifespans, costs, and maintenance needs — this calculator estimates length and size only, not which material best suits your climate and budget.
  • A gutter’s slope (a slight pitch toward the downspout) is necessary for proper drainage, but isn’t captured in a length calculation. Gutters need a small downward slope along their run so water actually flows to the downspout instead of pooling — this is an installation detail separate from the total length ordered.
