The amount of siding a house needs is its gross wall area minus a deduction for windows and doors, converted into “squares” — the standard 100-square-foot unit siding is sold in.   • Forgetting the openings deduction. Ordering siding for the full gross wall area without deducting for windows and doors leads to over-buying — even a modest home usually has 10% or more of its wall area taken up by openings.
  • Ignoring the roof pitch’s effect on gable walls. A house with gable ends has more wall area up top than a simple perimeter-times- height estimate captures — for a more precise total, measure gable triangles separately and add them in, or use a generously rounded average wall height.

What percentage should I deduct for windows and doors?

10% is a commonly-used rule of thumb for an average home, but it varies by house design -- a home with large picture windows or many doors will have a higher percentage, while a home with few openings will have less. If you know your actual window and door area, use that instead for a more accurate estimate.

How many boxes of siding do I need?
