Solving for Swim Pace, Time, or Distance

Swim pace is the time it takes to cover 100 meters or 100 yards, the standard way swimmers measure speed. Enter any two of distance, time, or pace to find the third.

Key Factors to Consider

  • Pool length matters when comparing swim pace across different venues. A 25-meter (short course) pool and a 50-meter (long course/Olympic) pool involve a different number of turns per distance swum — more frequent turns generally allow a slightly faster overall pace due to the push-off from each wall, which is why short-course and long-course times for the same distance aren’t always perfectly comparable.
  • Swim stroke has a significant effect on pace, more so than in running or cycling. Freestyle is typically the fastest competitive stroke, while breaststroke is typically the slowest — comparing pace across different strokes for the same swimmer isn’t a fair apples-to-apples comparison the way comparing pace across similar running routes would be.
  • Open-water swimming introduces variables (currents, waves, sighting) that a pool-based pace estimate doesn’t capture. A pace comfortably held in a calm, controlled pool environment often doesn’t translate directly to open water, where navigation and water conditions add real additional time and effort.

  • Mixing meters and yards without converting. A 25-yard pool and a 25-meter pool aren’t the same distance (a yard is shorter than a meter) — comparing a “per 100” pace from one directly against the other without converting overstates or understates real speed differences.
  • Comparing pace across different strokes as if they were equivalent. Freestyle pace and breaststroke pace for the same swimmer aren’t directly comparable — stroke choice affects pace far more than running form affects running pace.
  • Ignoring pool length when comparing times. A short-course pace and a long-course pace for the same swimmer at the same effort typically aren’t identical, since more frequent wall turns in a shorter pool add a small speed boost from each push-off.
