Solving for Whichever of Pace, Time, or Distance You Need

Pace is the time it takes to cover one unit of distance — minutes and seconds per mile or kilometer — the standard way runners describe how fast they’re going. This calculator solves for whichever of pace, distance, or time you don’t already know, given the other two: find your pace from a run’s distance and finish time, find your finish time from a goal pace and distance, or find how far you went from your time and pace.

All three are the same underlying relationship (distance = speed x time, with pace being the inverse of speed), just solved for whichever value is missing.

Worked Example

Find my pace: a 10 km run finished in 50:00:

  1. Pace: 50:00÷10=5:00 per km\vA{\text{50:00}} \div \vC{10} = \vB{\text{5:00 per km}}.
  2. Speed: 10 km÷(50÷60) h=12 km/h\vC{10} \text{ km} \div \left(\vA{50} \div 60\right) \text{ h} = 12 \text{ km/h}.

Find my finish time: running 5 km at a 6:00/km pace:

Find my distance: running for 30:00 at a 5:00/km pace:

Key Factors to Consider

  • Pace naturally varies by terrain, elevation, and weather, not just fitness. A flat, cool- weather run and a hilly, hot-weather run at the same effort level can produce noticeably different paces — comparing pace across very different conditions can be misleading without accounting for that.
  • Race pace and training pace usually differ intentionally, not by accident. Many training plans deliberately use slower “easy” paces for most runs, saving a faster goal pace specifically for race day or dedicated speed workouts — checking a single training run’s pace against a race goal pace isn’t always an apples-to-apples comparison.
  • Negative splits (running the second half faster than the first) are a commonly recommended race strategy. Many experienced runners and coaches suggest starting slightly conservative and gradually increasing pace through a race, since starting too fast can lead to a significant slowdown later — this calculator’s overall average pace doesn’t reveal that pacing strategy within a single run.

Common Mistakes

  • Mixing up minutes-per-mile and minutes-per-kilometer. A pace of 8:00 means something very different depending on the unit — always double-check which distance unit a pace figure (yours or one you’re comparing against) was actually measured in before treating two numbers as comparable.
  • Entering total time in the wrong format. A finish time of “1:05:30” (one hour, five minutes, thirty seconds) is easy to mistype as minutes and seconds only — for runs longer than an hour, make sure the hours component is actually included.
  • Treating average pace as constant throughout a run. A single average pace number hides real variation — someone who ran the first mile fast and faded badly can have the same average pace as someone who ran evenly the whole way, even though the two runs felt very different.
  • Comparing pace across a hilly and a flat course without adjusting expectations. The same effort level produces a slower pace on hills or in heat — a pace that looks like “getting slower” between two runs may just reflect harder conditions, not a real fitness change.
