Key Factors to Consider

  • The Cooper test estimate assumes a genuinely maximal, all-out effort for the full 12 minutes. A pacing strategy that starts too fast and fades badly, or one that’s too conservative throughout, both produce a distance that understates true aerobic fitness — a well-paced, genuinely maximal effort is what the original formula was calibrated against.
