  • These recommendations increase with activity level because exercise, especially resistance training, increases the body’s need for protein to repair and build muscle tissue. Someone who is sedentary needs less protein than someone doing regular strength training, which is why this calculator’s higher ranges are aimed specifically at athletic and muscle-building goals rather than general everyday activity.
  • Spreading protein intake across multiple meals throughout the day is commonly recommended for supporting muscle protein synthesis, rather than eating it all in one sitting. Many nutrition guidelines suggest 3-4 evenly-spaced protein-containing meals rather than one very large protein-heavy meal, since the body can only use so much protein for muscle building at once.
  • Protein quality (which specific amino acids a source provides) matters alongside total quantity. Animal proteins and some plant combinations (like rice and beans together) provide a more “complete” amino acid profile than some individual plant protein sources alone — this calculator estimates a total gram target, not a breakdown of protein source quality.
