Worked Example

Traveling 300 km in 4 hours:

  1. Speed: 300÷4=75 km/h\vA{300} \div \vB{4} = \vC{75} \text{ km/h}.

All three solve-for modes agree: entering 75 km/h and 4 hours finds 300 km; entering 75 km/h and 300 km finds 4 hours — each direction gives the same consistent trip.

Key Factors to Consider

  • This calculates a straightforward AVERAGE speed over the entire trip, not the speed at any single moment. A trip that includes stops, slower sections, or a faster highway stretch will show an average speed that’s different from what a speedometer read at any particular instant — average speed and instantaneous speed answer genuinely different questions.
  • Average speed and average velocity aren’t always the same thing, though they’re often used interchangeably in everyday conversation. Speed is a scalar (just a magnitude), while velocity is a vector (magnitude and direction) — for a round trip that returns to the starting point, net displacement is zero, so average velocity would be zero even though average speed clearly isn’t.
  • Fuel economy and travel time both depend directly on speed, which is why this same formula underlies several related calculators. Common Mistakes

  • Mixing distance and time units without converting first. Entering distance in miles but time in a unit that implies kilometers per hour (or vice versa) produces a nonsensical speed — keep the distance and speed unit selectors matched to the same system.
  • Treating a single leg’s speed as the whole trip’s average. A trip with a fast highway stretch and a slow city stretch has an overall average speed that’s a weighted result of both, not simply either leg’s speed on its own.
  • Forgetting to include stopped time when solving for average speed over a whole trip. If the total time includes rest stops or traffic delays, the resulting average speed will be lower than the speed actually driven while moving.
