A heavier lifter can move more absolute weight than a lighter one without necessarily being “stronger” relative to their own bodyweight — that’s the problem both formulas solve. Each one fits a curve to real competition data describing how strength potential scales with bodyweight, then uses that curve to produce a coefficient: multiply a lifter’s total by their bodyweight’s coefficient, and lifters of any size land on the same comparable scale.

Wilks and DOTS aren’t the same formula — DOTS is newer (introduced in 2019, fit against more recent and larger competition data) and has become the official scoring formula for several federations, including USA Powerlifting, since around 2020. Wilks is the original 1994 formula and is still widely used and referenced elsewhere. This calculator shows both rather than picking one, since which one matters depends on the competition or leaderboard you’re comparing against.

The Formula

Both formulas take the same overall shape — a lift total divided by a polynomial of bodyweight, scaled by 500:

The Wilks formula uses a 5th-degree polynomial; DOTS uses a 4th-degree polynomial. Both use separate published coefficients for men and women, since the underlying bodyweight-to-strength curve differs by sex. The exact coefficients are long-standing, publicly documented constants used throughout the competitive powerlifting community — not something this calculator estimates or approximates.

A 100 kg male lifter with a 500 kg total:

  1. Wilks score: ≈ 304.3
  2. DOTS score: ≈ 307.8

Both land squarely in the range commonly cited for a solid intermediate-to-advanced competitive total — scores in the 300s are typically seen as a solid intermediate lifter, 400s as advanced, and 500+ as approaching elite or professional-level performance.

Key Factors to Consider

  • Wilks and DOTS scores exist specifically to let lifters of very different bodyweights be fairly compared and ranked, which raw totals alone can’t do. A heavier lifter’s larger raw total doesn’t automatically mean they’re relatively stronger than a lighter lifter — these formulas normalize for bodyweight specifically so fair cross-weight-class comparisons and best-lifter awards are possible.
  • Which formula actually matters for a given competition depends entirely on that federation’s own official scoring choice. Since USA Powerlifting and other federations shifted to DOTS around 2020 while other organizations still use Wilks, checking which formula a specific competition or leaderboard uses is more useful than assuming one is universally “the” standard.
  • These formulas were fit to real, historical competition data, meaning they reflect observed patterns rather than a theoretical ideal. Common Mistakes

  • Comparing a single-lift score against someone else’s full-total score. A Wilks/DOTS score computed from just a deadlift isn’t on the same basis as one computed from a squat + bench + deadlift total — always confirm both scores being compared use the same basis.
  • Entering bodyweight at the wrong measurement point. Federations typically use weigh-in bodyweight, not a lifter’s walk-around weight on a different day — a mismatch here shifts the coefficient and produces a score that doesn’t match the official one for that meet.
  • Assuming Wilks and DOTS should always agree closely. The two formulas are independent statistical fits to different competition datasets, so it’s normal for them to diverge somewhat, especially at the extremes of the bodyweight range — a difference between them isn’t a sign either score was calculated wrong.
