How This Calculator Works

A trip’s fuel cost is the distance traveled, divided by your vehicle’s fuel economy, multiplied by the price of fuel. Enter your trip distance, your vehicle’s fuel economy (in MPG or L per 100 km, whichever you know), and the price of fuel, and this calculator returns how much fuel you’ll need and what it will cost.

The Formula

When working in MPG and price-per-gallon instead, this calculator converts internally so the math comes out the same regardless of which unit system you’re more comfortable with.

Worked Example

A 500 km trip in a vehicle getting 8 L per 100 km, with fuel at $1.50 per liter:

  1. Fuel Needed: 500×(8÷100)=40 liters\vA{500} \times (\vB{8} \div 100) = \vC{40} \text{ liters}.
  2. Total Cost: 40×1.50=60.00\vC{40} \times \vD{1.50} = \vE{60.00}.
  3. Cost per km: 60.00÷500=0.12\vE{60.00} \div \vA{500} = 0.12.

Does this account for fuel price changes during a long trip?

No — this uses a single fuel price for the entire trip, which is a reasonable estimate for most trips. For a longer road trip where prices vary significantly by region, you could split it into legs and calculate each separately with that region's typical price.

Why do I need to know both MPG and price per gallon (or L/100km and price per liter)?

Fuel economy tells you how much fuel the trip needs; price per unit tells you what that fuel costs. This calculator multiplies the two together, so it needs both figures in a consistent unit pairing (MPG with price-per-gallon, or L/100km with price-per-liter) — switching the fuel economy unit automatically relabels the price field to match.
