How This Calculator Works

A golf handicap index estimates how many strokes above par a player’s BEST rounds tend to be, scaled so it means the same thing on any course. Enter a course rating, slope rating, and your recent 18-hole scores, and this calculator estimates your handicap index using the official USGA World Handicap System (WHS) formula.

This calculator omits the official Playing Conditions Calculation (PCC) — a small adjustment based on how an entire field of golfers scored on a given day, which requires official real-time data this calculator has no way to look up — so treat the result as a close estimate, not an official handicap index.

The Formula

  1. Score differential (one per round): (ScoreCourse Rating)×113÷Slope Rating(\vA{\text{Score}} - \vB{\text{Course Rating}}) \times 113 \div \vC{\text{Slope Rating}}. The constant 113 is the slope rating of a course of “standard” difficulty, so every round gets scaled onto the same baseline regardless of which course it was played on.
  2. How many differentials to average: the WHS uses only your BEST few rounds, not an average of everything — a handicap represents potential, not typical performance. The exact count (and a downward adjustment for players with very few rounds on record) follows an official table: with 8 rounds on record, for example, only your best 2 differentials are averaged.
  3. Handicap Index: (Average of the lowest differentials+adjustment)×0.96(\text{Average of the lowest differentials} + \text{adjustment}) \times 0.96, truncated (not rounded) to one decimal place.

Worked Example

A player with a 72.0 course rating, 113 slope rating, and these 8 recent scores: 85, 90, 88, 95, 100, 82, 91, 87:

  1. Differentials: 13, 18, 16, 23, 28, 10, 19, 15 (since the slope rating of 113 makes the formula simplify to just score − course rating).
  2. With 8 rounds on record, the lowest 2 differentials are averaged: (10+13)÷2=11.5(10 + 13) \div 2 = 11.5.
  3. Handicap Index: 11.5×0.96=11.0411.5 \times 0.96 = 11.04, truncated to 11.0.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are course rating and slope rating?

Course rating is the expected score for a scratch (0-handicap) golfer on that course, usually close to par. Slope rating measures how much harder the course plays for a bogey golfer relative to a scratch golfer, on a scale from 55 to 155, with 113 representing 'standard' difficulty. Both are set officially for each course and tee combination, usually printed on the scorecard.

Why does it only use my best rounds instead of averaging all of them?

A handicap index is meant to represent your potential — what you're capable of shooting on a good day — not your typical average round. Averaging every round would understate a golfer's real skill, since everyone has off days.

Why is this only an estimate, not my official handicap index?

The official calculation includes a Playing Conditions Calculation (PCC) — a small adjustment based on how an entire field of golfers scored on a given day, factoring in weather and course conditions.
