How This Calculator Works
Gas mileage (MPG) is the distance a vehicle travels divided by the amount of fuel it uses,
expressed in miles per gallon. Enter the distance you traveled and how much fuel you used to
cover it, and this calculator returns your fuel economy — in MPG, and as the metric equivalent
(liters per 100 kilometers) used in most of the rest of the world.
To measure your own vehicle’s real-world mileage: fill the tank completely, reset your trip
odometer (or note the current reading), drive normally until you need to refuel, then fill up
again and note exactly how much fuel it took. That fuel amount and the distance since your last
fill-up are exactly what this calculator needs.
The Formula

Note that these two figures move in opposite directions for the same fuel efficiency: a
higher MPG is better (more distance per gallon), while a lower L/100km is better (less fuel
needed per 100 kilometers) — they aren’t simply the same number converted, since one measures
“distance per fixed fuel” and the other measures “fuel per fixed distance.”
Worked Example
A trip of 100 km using 8 liters of fuel:
Converted to imperial units: about 62.1 miles using about 2.11 gallons.
MPG: 62.1÷2.11≈29.4 MPG.
Metric equivalent: (8÷100)×100=8.0 L per 100 km.
Cómo funciona esta calculadora
El rendimiento de combustible (MPG) es la distancia que recorre un vehículo dividida entre la
cantidad de combustible que usa, expresada en millas por galón. Ingresa la distancia que
recorriste y cuánto combustible usaste para cubrirla, y esta calculadora te da tu rendimiento de
combustible — en MPG, y como el equivalente métrico (litros por 100 kilómetros) que se usa en la
mayor parte del resto del mundo.
Para medir el rendimiento real de tu propio vehículo: llena el tanque por completo, reinicia el
odómetro de viaje (o anota la lectura actual), conduce con normalidad hasta que necesites
repostar, luego llena el tanque de nuevo y anota exactamente cuánto combustible cargaste. Esa
cantidad de combustible y la distancia recorrida desde tu última carga son exactamente lo que
necesita esta calculadora.

Ten en cuenta que estas dos cifras se mueven en direcciones opuestas para la misma eficiencia
de combustible: un MPG más alto es mejor (más distancia por galón), mientras que un L/100km más
bajo es mejor (se necesita menos combustible por cada 100 kilómetros) — no son simplemente el
mismo número convertido, ya que uno mide “distancia por combustible fijo” y el otro mide

Why does the metric equivalent go the opposite direction?
MPG measures distance per fixed amount of fuel, so a higher number is better. L/100km measures fuel needed per fixed distance, so a LOWER number is better — they're not the same number converted, they measure the relationship in opposite directions.
Does this account for city vs. highway driving?
No — this calculates your actual real-world mileage from whatever distance and fuel you enter, which naturally reflects whatever mix of driving you did. It doesn't separately estimate city or highway EPA-style ratings, which require standardized test conditions this calculator doesn't simulate.
