How This Calculator Works
Every kilowatt-hour a solar system generates displaces electricity that would otherwise come
from the grid — and the U.S. EPA publishes exactly how much CO2 that displaces. Enter your
system’s annual electricity output, and this calculator reports the CO2 emissions avoided, plus
two everyday comparisons that make the figure concrete.
The conversion factors come from the EPA’s own Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies Calculator, built from
EPA’s eGRID emissions data — the same reference the EPA’s own calculator tool uses, not a figure
this site derived independently.
The Formula
CO2 Avoided=Annual kWh×0.394 kg CO2/kWh
That result is then divided by two more EPA-published factors to produce the tree and mileage
comparisons: 60 kg of CO2 per urban tree planted (per year of growth), and 0.393 kg of CO2 per
mile driven in an average gasoline passenger vehicle.
Worked Example
A solar system generating 10,000 kWh in a year:
CO2 avoided: 10,000×0.394=3,940 kg (about 8,686 lbs).
Equivalent to about 66 urban trees planted for a year, or about 10,025 miles not driven.
Common Mistakes
Assuming this reflects your exact local grid. The EPA figure is a national average — a
region powered mostly by hydro or nuclear avoids less CO2 per kWh than one powered mostly by
coal, since the “electricity displaced” varies by what your specific grid would have burned.

Errores comunes
