The Formula

CO2 Avoided=Annual kWh×0.394 kg CO2/kWh\text{CO2 Avoided} = \vA{\text{Annual kWh}} \times \vB{0.394 \text{ kg CO2/kWh}}

That result is then divided by two more EPA-published factors to produce the tree and mileage comparisons: 60 kg of CO2 per urban tree planted (per year of growth), and 0.393 kg of CO2 per mile driven in an average gasoline passenger vehicle.
