How This Calculator Works

Ovulation is estimated to occur 14 days before your next expected period, regardless of how long your overall cycle is. Enter the first day of your last period and your average cycle length, and this calculator estimates your ovulation date, fertile window, and next expected period.

This works because the two halves of a menstrual cycle behave differently: the first half (from your period until ovulation) varies in length from person to person and cycle to cycle, but the second half (from ovulation until the next period, called the luteal phase) is consistently close to 14 days. That’s why a longer or shorter overall cycle shifts when ovulation happens, while the gap between ovulation and the next period stays about the same.

The fertile window is estimated as the 5 days before ovulation through 1 day after it — sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for up to about 5 days, while the released egg is viable for roughly 24 hours, together giving a commonly-cited ~6-day fertile window per cycle.

A last period starting January 1 with a 28-day cycle:
