How This Calculator Works
Pace is the time it takes to cover one unit of distance — minutes and seconds per mile or
kilometer — the standard way runners describe how fast they’re going. This calculator solves
for whichever of pace, distance, or time you don’t already know, given the other two: find your
pace from a run’s distance and finish time, find your finish time from a goal pace and distance,
or find how far you went from your time and pace.
All three are the same underlying relationship (distance = speed x time, with pace being the
inverse of speed), just solved for whichever value is missing.
Worked Example
Find my pace: a 10 km run finished in 50:00:
Pace: 50:00÷10=5:00 per km.
Speed: 10 km÷(50÷60) h=12 km/h.
Find my finish time: running 5 km at a 6:00/km pace:
Time: 5×6:00=30:00.
Find my distance: running for 30:00 at a 5:00/km pace:
Distance: 30:00÷5:00=6 km.
Choose "My pace," enter the race distance and your finish time, and this calculator returns your average pace per mile or kilometer, plus your average speed.
What's the difference between pace and speed?
Pace is time per unit of distance (e.g. minutes per mile) — lower is faster. Speed is distance per unit of time (e.g. miles per hour) — higher is faster. They describe the same thing from opposite directions, which is why this calculator shows both.
Can I use this for walking or cycling too?
Yes — the math is the same for any activity where you're covering a distance over time. Just enter your own numbers regardless of the activity.
