How This Calculator Works
Drywall coverage is based on a room’s total wall area minus its door and window openings,
divided by however many square feet a single sheet covers. Enter your room’s dimensions, door
and window counts, and preferred sheet size, and this calculator works out how many sheets to buy.
Standard drywall sheets come in a few common sizes — 4’x8’, 4’x10’, and 4’x12’ — and choosing a
larger size means fewer seams to tape and finish later, at the cost of a heavier, harder-to-handle
sheet.
The Formula

Net wall area is the room’s perimeter times wall height, minus a typical planning-estimate
deduction for each door (about 20 sq ft) and window (about 15 sq ft) — the same convention this
site’s own Paint Calculator uses for the same reason.
Worked Example
A 4m x 3.5m room with 2.4m walls, 1 door, 2 windows, using standard 4’x8’
sheets:
Net wall area: about 31.4 sq meters (gross wall area minus door/window deductions).
Sheets needed: 11 — recommended order with a 10% waste margin: 13 sheets.
Estimated screws: 416 (about 32 per sheet, a commonly-cited installation planning figure).
Common Mistakes
Forgetting the ceiling. This calculator covers walls only — a ceiling needs its own
separate area calculation (room length x width) added to your total.
Buying exactly the sheet count with no waste margin. Cuts around openings and occasional
breakage mean the bare minimum sheet count rarely covers a real job — the waste margin exists
for exactly this.
Choosing the largest sheet size without considering handling. 4’x12’ sheets mean fewer seams
but are significantly heavier — a two-person job in most cases, unlike a 4’x8’ sheet.

Errores comunes
Olvidar el techo. Esta calculadora cubre únicamente las paredes — un techo necesita su

What size drywall sheet should I use?
4'x8' is the most common size and easiest to handle alone. Larger sheets (4'x10', 4'x12') mean fewer seams to tape and finish, which can look better on large, unbroken walls, but they're heavier and harder to maneuver without help.
Does this account for the ceiling?
No — this calculates wall coverage only. If you're also drywalling a ceiling, calculate that area (room length x width) separately and add it to your total sheet count.
